Pyongyang

The capital Pyongyang, located in the middle lowlands of the north-west Korean peninsula, is the centre of economy, politics and culture. Pyongyang refers to flatlands and holds 5,000 years of history. It is the birthplace of the Taedonggang, one of the major civilisations in the world. Equally, it was capital of Ancient Joson, a Korean notion existing from early 30th century BC to 108 BC and the capital of Koguryo existing from 277 BC to AD 668. Pyongyang is a central tourism hub bound with Korean history.

Tower of Juche Idea

The Tower of Juche stands on the bank of the Taedong River, which runs through Pyongyang. It was unveiled in April 1982 to mark the 70th anniversary of the birth of Kim II Sung. The monument is built to preserve the ideology of Juche founded by Kim II Sung through generations.

Arch of Triumph

At the foot of Moran Hill in Pyongyang is the Arch of Triumph. The arch unveiled in April 1982 marks the 70th anniversary of the birth of Kim II Sung, commemorates the return of Kim II Sung to Korea after his liberation of Korea from Japanese occupation. The arch is the world’s tallest arch at 60 meters tall and 52.5 meters wide.

Monument to the Three Charters for National Reunification

The monument, built in August 2001, reflects the desire and determination of the Korean people to reunify the country according to the three charters established by Kim II Sung. There are two Korean women depicted in the monument — one wears the traditional costume from the north and the other wears the traditional costume from the south. Together, the two women hold the high emblem of the three charters for national reunification. Inside the tower body holds rare stone slabs sent by southern Koreans, Koreans around the world and other countries in support of the reunification.

Victorious Fatherland Liberation War Museum and Monument to the Fatherland Liberation War

The Victorious Fatherland Liberation War Museum and Monument to the Fatherland Liberation War conserves the leadership of Kim II Sung in the Fatherland Liberation War (1950-1953) and the Kim Jong II role in Songun revolution.

The museum immediately after the war in August 1953 and was renovated in July 2013, the 60th anniversary of the war. The exhibitions present the siege of Teajon and weaponry, as well as the US armed spy ship captured by Koreans in 1968.

The Monument to the Fatherland Liberation War, built in 1993, marks the 40th anniversary of the war. It commemorates the soldiers who fought and defended the freedom of their country under the leadership of Kim II Sung.

Moran Hill

Located in the centre of Pyongyang is the garden of the capital. Moran Hill is one of the eight scenic spots in Korea and spans over 270 hectares of land. In the spring, it is a flower garden with over 180 species of plants and flowers and in the summer, it is an ideal summer resort for the DPRK to enjoy.
